Possible shark sighting clears Babylon beach
Beachgoers in the Town of Babylon were pulled from the water after a possible shark sighting Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
Lifeguards closed the waters at Overlook Beach after spotting a fin in the water around 3 p.m., town spokesman Kevin Bonner said.
It was not immediately clear what kind of animal was reported or if it came into contact with any people, Bonner said.
A great white shark was spotted in May off Robert Moses State Park at Fire Island, drawing attention from local residents. That shark, a female dubbed Mary Lee, was tagged by shark research nonprofit OCEARCH, allowing shark aficionados to watch her movements online.
