A Long Island Power Authority substation in Melville went down early Tuesday morning, knocking out power to traffic signals on the Long Island Expressway service roads and Route 110, as well as to hundreds of commercial customers, including Newsday.

LIPA spokesman, Mark Gross, said the outage occurred at 6:44 a.m. and said about 1,150 customers were immediately affected. He said that by 7:45 a.m. power had been restored to almost all those customers.

Gross said the cause of the outage was under investigation. The substation is on Ruland Road.

Police said the outage knocked out traffic lights on the south service road of the LIE, as well as Route 110.

Those outages caused brief traffic delays, police said.
