The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for Long Island on Friday.

A forecast of heavy rain -- with amounts ranging between a half-inch to 4 inches -- from Friday morning through Saturday night means there is potential for flooding, the Upton-based service said.

Included in the watch are Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City, portions of southern Connecticut, Westchester County and northeastern New Jersey.

The service also issued a fog advisory covering most of Nassau and Suffolk counties until 9 a.m. Friday.

Dense fog means visibility "will frequently be reduced to one-quarter mile or less," the service said. "Drivers are urged to use caution ... slow down."

Tim Morrin, a meteorologist at the service, said the rain should wash away the fog by late morning.

Rain is likely to start after 10 a.m., with the chance for precipitation at 80 percent.

Morrin said most of Long Island can expect rainfall amounts on the high end of 2 to 2 1/2 inches.

Rain also is predicted for Saturday through Wednesday, the service said, with partly sunny -- and dry -- weather not expected until Thursday.
