If it felt a little colder than normal Friday morning, that's because it was.
Friday marked the coldest Feb. 11 recorded at Long Island MacArthur Airport, the National Weather Service said, reaching a teeth-rattling 9 degrees at 6:51 a.m.
The previous record low for Feb. 11 at Islip was 11 degrees in 2008, according to the Upton-based service.
That's still a bit shy of the minus 3 degrees record at Brookhaven National Laboratory, set on Feb. 11, 1979. The lab's weather records date to the late 1940s.
Weather service meteorologist Lauren Nash said the cold won't last long, however, thanks to a high-pressure mass moving in from the southwest.
"Usually, when we get these cold spells, a high-pressure system will follow, bringing in warmer temperatures," she said.
Saturday and Sunday are expected to have clear skies with temperatures near 40 degrees, she said. On Monday, the high is expected to be 46 degrees.
