Woman rescued from burning car by firefighters, lifeguard, police say
Two off-duty members of the Central Islip Fire Department and a third Good Samaritan, rescued a Bohemia woman from a burning car after police say she crashed into a tree in Islandia.
According to Suffolk County police, Becky Boeckmann, 35, was driving a 2009 Pontiac G6 eastbound on Express Drive South when her car left the roadway and struck a tree. The vehicle caught fire at about 6:45 p.m.
Two off-duty members of the Central Islip Fire Department, Eric Leonard and Kenneth Degan, were passing by and stopped to help Boeckmann, police added. Leonard pulled her from the vehicle, while Degan put out the fire. Robyn Frank, who works as a lifeguard, provided medical aid to Boeckmann.
Boeckmann was taken via ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition. No other injuries were reported.
The crash is under investigation. Police ask anyone with information on the crash to contact Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452.
