A child on a school bus and the driver, along with a passenger on board a Suffolk County Transit bus, were treated for injuries at a hospital Wednesday after the vehicles collided at a Riverhead intersection, the police said.

The crash occurred about 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of Doctors Path and Northville Turnpike, the Town of Riverhead Police Department said in a news release. The minischool bus was heading north on Northville Turnpike and the Suffolk bus was heading east on Doctors Path when they collided, causing the transit bus to overturn, the police said.

The driver of the Suffolk bus, the only other person on aboard, was not injured. Two others on the school bus, a pair of bus attendants, escaped injury.

Neither the Montauk Bus Company, which operates the school bus, nor Suffolk County Transit immediately responded to Newsday's e-mailed requests for comment late Wednesday.

Members of volunteer ambulance agencies in Flanders and Riverhead, as well as volunteers with the Mattituck Fire Department, also responded to the crash.

Riverhead police ask that any witnesses to the collision call the department at (631) 727-4500. Calls will remain confidential.
