Two people died when their car struck a tree in Ronkonkoma on Saturday morning, according to Suffolk County police.

The crash happened at 11:20 a.m. Saturday, police said in a news release Saturday evening. A Subaru Forester going west on Peconic Street crossed into the eastbound lane and hit a tree off the road's edge, killing the male driver and female passenger, according to the release. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

According to the release,  the identities of the two people who were killed were being withheld pending positive identification by the county medical examiner's office.

The crash shut down Peconic Street between 13th and 17th avenues. The roadway was reopened at roughly 3:10 p.m.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and it was unclear if anyone else was in the vehicle that crashed, according to a spokeswoman with the Suffolk County Police Department. She also could not immediately provide further information about the crash, including possible causes.

The Lakeland Fire Department, which has a station at the intersection of Peconic Street and 13th Avenue, declined to provide details about the crash.

Suffolk's Fifth Squad is investigating the crash. They are asking anyone with information to call them at 631-854-8552.
