Two people died Wednesday morning in a head-on crash on Route 109 in West Babylon, Suffolk police said.

At 9:38 a.m., a 63-year-old Babylon resident was driving a 2005 Chevrolet east in the westbound lanes of Route 109, near Platt Avenue, when his vehicle collided with a 2021 BMW X3 heading west carrying two occupants.

The Chevrolet's driver, identified late Wednesday as Frank Motta, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The BMW passenger, Fernando Goncalves, 79, of West Babylon, was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The BMW driver, Ana-Paula Goncalves-Kalinowski, 49, of Centereach, was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives ask anyone with information on the crash to contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
