A man was killed Thursday morning when the car he was driving hit a dump truck on Route 109 in West Babylon, Suffolk County police said.

Scott Derrer, 63, of West Babylon was driving a 2006 Hyundai Elantra southbound on Route 109 when his car struck the rear of the 1996 International Harvester dump truck, police said. 

Derrer was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the dump truck and a passenger were not injured, police said.

The crash happened around 7:40 a.m. between East Drive and Arnold Avenue, police said. 

The Hyundai was impounded for a safety check, police said. Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety Section officers inspected the dump truck at the scene.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
