Route 110 reopens after gas leak in S. Huntington, cops say
A gas leak forced the closure of busy Route 110 near Walt Whitman Shops in South Huntington for about 90 minutes on Thursday after National Grid said a contractor struck a gas line. The road reopened at about 12:30 p.m., police said.
Old Walt Whitman Road also was closed in the area, Suffolk County police said.
Police said a 911 call at 10:55 a.m. reported that a gas valve in the area had been ruptured, causing the closure.
A National Grid spokeswoman, Wendy Ladd, said a dump truck hit a curb box, damaging service to 488 Walt Whitman Rd., which is Route 110. A new Starbucks is at the location where a dairy store once stood.
A National Grid crew is still at the scene, repairing the damaged service. National Grid said other customers were unaffected.
Police said that during the closures, Route 110 was closed northbound at Overhill Road and southbound at Schwab Road. Old Walt Whitman Road was closed at West Hills Road.
