The Northport Fire Department needed about 10 minutes Tuesday afternoon to extinguish a fire on a 40-foot sailboat moored in Northport Harbor, a department spokesman said.

The department responded to a call about 3:07 p.m. with a crew headed by Chief John McKenna and its 35-foot fire boat, Assistant Chief Chris Hughes said.

There were no injuries, Hughes said, and the boat was unoccupied. "We definitely think it was accidental," he said of the fire, which he called minor.

Hughes said the sailboat was moored close to the mouth of the harbor, in the vicinity of the seaplane hangar for the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum.

The department also responded with several support vehicles on land, Hughes said, in case more equipment was needed.
