Saltaire to receive $3.4M for Sandy road repairs

The Village of Saltaire on Fire Island will receive $3.4 million in federal aid to pay for repairs to a dozen roads damaged by superstorm Sandy, New York's U.S. senators announced Thursday.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is funding the projects, said Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both Democrats, in a joint statement.

"This critical funding will ensure a small community like Saltaire does not have to shoulder the entire burden of these expenses," Schumer said.

Saltaire Mayor Robert Cox was not immediately available for comment.

The village has just 37 year-round residents, and all but 15 of its 459 housing units are summer homes, according to the National Park Service, citing the 2010 U.S. Census.
