Search continues for driver who hit Bay Shore toddler

Under the watchful eyes of her mother and godmother, little Shantir Reid-Robinson played outside the Stone Water Garden apartments in Bay Shore.

At about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Latrisha Reid, Shantir's mother, left the toddler outside with her godmother and went briefly back into her apartment, she said in an interview Thursday.

"I went to get her stroller and snacks, and the godmother came inside yelling my name," saying that Shantir had been hit by a car, said Reid, 23.

"I went running down the parking lot. I was screaming as I was running, and I could see my daughter lying on her side, bleeding out her nose. She was scraped on her face. She wasn't moving or anything," Reid said.

Two days later, Suffolk police were still searching for whoever was behind the wheel of the SUV a witness said struck and injured the 20-month-old girl as she played near the curb between the parking lot and Howells Road.

The SUV then headed west on Howells, a witness told police. Investigators have said it's possible the driver of the SUV did not realize he or she struck the child.

Shantir is in intensive care at a Long Island hospital, her mother said. "She's doing OK. She's hanging in there," Reid said.

Reid is asking the driver to come forward.

"All I want is the driver to come clean and turn themselves in. That's an innocent baby that got hit for no reason," Reid said. "They didn't even stop to see if my daughter was OK. It could have been an accident but they kept going."

Shantir hasn't regained consciousness since the accident, her mother said. "All I can do is ask everyone to pray for her," Reid said.
