Four homes in the area of College Road at Palm Street in Selden were evacuated Thursday afternoon after a contractor hit a gas main, Suffolk County police said.

As of 4:37 p.m. the scene had been "made safe," and "no services were lost," said a spokeswoman for National Grid.

The police Emergency Services Unit responded to a call for help at 3:11 p.m., and National Grid, KeySpan and the Brookhaven fire marshal responded to the scene, police said.

College Road at Palm Street remains closed, said police.
