Selden, Manorville homes may be demolished, Brookhaven pols say

A pair of vacant houses in Selden and Manorville may be demolished after they were declared unsafe by the Brookhaven Town Board.

Both houses had racked up town code violations dating back several years, and engineers hired by the town found numerous structural deficiencies in each, town officials said Thursday.

A house on Adrirondack Drive in Selden had been damaged by a fire last year and periodically has been occupied by squatters, officials said. The home’s owners previously were charged with renting illegal apartments, officials said. The house has been in foreclosure for about eight years, officials said.

The Manorville house, on Carol Avenue, has been vacant since 2009 and was found to have mold and deterioration, officials said, adding the home’s owners have indicated they may tear down the structure.

The town board voted unanimously on Thursday to declare the houses unsafe. The town’s costs for demolishing or boarding up the houses would be added the homeowners’ tax bills, officials said.

Public hearings on taking similar action regarding two other houses, on Marshall Drive in Selden and Middle Country Road in Middle Island, were postponed to next month.
