Cops: Two people arrested on drug charge in Northport apartment where 5-month-old baby lived
Two people were arrested on drug charges in a Northport apartment early Friday morning after an investigation revealed drugs were being sold from and around the apartment, police said.
In addition to weapon, drug possession and drug paraphernalia charges, the man and woman were charged with endangering the welfare of a child after a 5-month-old was found to be living in the apartment, Northport police said Friday evening.
Police said Shamari Williams, 26, and Aliza Durante, 20, were arrested at the apartment after police executed a search warrant at 6 a.m. Police found cocaine and marijuana inside the apartment, as well as materials used to weigh, package and distribute cocaine and heroin. They also found an electronic stun gun, police said.
Police initiated the investigation after fielding complaints from local residents about drug activity at one of the apartments in a home on Prospect Avenue. After about four weeks, police gathered enough evidence to request a search warrant for the location, the department said.
Williams and Durante are both charged with third-, fifth- and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia, seventh-degree criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of marijuana and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
Both were arraigned at Suffolk County First District Court in Central Islip on Friday. Court records show Durante was released on $750 bail. Records on Williams' arraignment were not available Friday night.
