VOTING

Noon to 9 p.m. at Shelter Island School.

THE BUDGET

The district proposes a $10,990,967 budget for 2015-16, a 4.95 percent increase from the current $10,472,814. The local tax levy would rise 1.7 percent, from $9,098,259 to $9,253,322. The increase is within the state's tax-cap limit of 2.04 percent, so a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget.

School taxes on the average single-family home would increase 1.4 percent, from $3,410 to $3,459. Teacher salaries would rise by 2 percent plus a 2 percent step increase. A part-time English as a Second Language teacher position will be changed to full-time, and new college-level courses will be added at the high school in social studies, English, Spanish language and science.
