Shinnecock crash victim still in hospital

One of the victims of a car crash that killed two members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation remained hospitalized Sunday.

Brian Bess Jr., 18, who was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center after Saturday's crash, was listed in fair condition, a hospital spokesman said.

Another passenger, Awan Gumbs, 31, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue. A hospital spokesman Sunday declined to confirm whether Gumbs remained at the hospital.

Firefighters had to extricate both men from the wreckage of the single-car crash.

Jason King, 33, and Duane White, 22, were killed in the crash that occurred at 2:20 a.m. Saturday on East Gate Road, just outside the tribe's reservation in Southampton, police officials said.

The cause of the wreck remains under investigation, but police have said speed was a factor.

It is not known whether the car's occupants were wearing seat belts.

The deaths stunned members of the close-knit tribe, many of whom had known King and White and watched them grow up on the Southampton reservation.
