A Shirley man was arrested after Riverhead Town Police said they caught him breaking into cars in Wading River while he was avoiding a warrant for other thefts.

Police said they received a report of a man breaking into cars on Fresh Pond Avenue in the early morning hours of Feb. 18. Responding officers were searching an area on Sunwood Drive, near where a man was spotted running through yards and into a farm field, when they saw Karl Wittig, 34.

Wittig, of West End in Shirley, matched the descriptions given by witnesses. Police said the officers caught up with Wittig in Calverton Meadows and arrested him.

Police said Wittig had an outstanding Suffolk County warrant and possessed property reported stolen in an earlier vehicle break-in.

In total, he was charged with six counts of fifth degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Wittig is being held at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
