Shirley residents advised to boil water after main break

Suffolk water authority officials on Monday issued an advisory to residents of southwest Shirley to boil water until Wednesday afternoon, following a water main break on William Floyd Parkway Sunday night.

“Residents are advised to boil water before use for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food. Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms and may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems,” read the advisory released by the Suffolk County Water Authority.

Officials, who were conducting door-to-door notifications of the boil-water advisory, advise anyone with such symptoms to seek medical attention.

The water main was shut off at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and was operational again by 10 a.m. Monday, officials said.
