A Town of Babylon park ranger shot and wounded a man who lunged at him with a knife Saturday at Tanner Park Marina in Copiague, Suffolk County police said.

The wounded man was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, according to police. The ranger was taken to a hospital for evaluation but information on whether he suffered injuries during the altercation was not available.

Police said the shooting is being investigated by Suffolk County homicide detectives.

The park ranger had been responding about 4:45 p.m. Saturday to a complaint of a suspicious person at the marina, located at 123 Baylawn Ave., when the man lunged at the ranger with a knife, police said. The ranger shot the man once in his chest, according to police.

Tanner Park is a town property with a residents-only beach, a restaurant, athletic fields and permitted boat slips.

Further details about the shooting, including the identities of the ranger and the wounded man, and whether charges had been filed against him, were not available.
