Shoreham beach, Miller Place facility to get $2.2M in federal funds
Rep. Lee Zeldin on Thursday announced $2.2 million in federal funds to Sills Gully Beach in Shoreham and Gully Landing Drainage Facility in Miller Place, which were heavily damaged in superstorm Sandy in October 2012.
The funding will be used to repair and reinforce the bluffs at the beach by installing a bulkhead, and for upgrades to the existing storm water drainage system, Zeldin’s press release said.
Zeldin (R-Shirley) said he worked closely with Brookhaven Town officials to secure the grant and helped fast-track the process for the repairs.
“As a result, Brookhaven Town will now be able to make renovations to protect, restore and strengthen the beach, so that Long Islanders can enjoy its beauty for generations to come,” Zeldin said.
“Whenever we can strengthen our shoreline and our beaches, we’re happy to do. They’ve taken a terrible beating over the last few years between the variety of storms that we’ve had,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine said Thursday.
The federal funds came through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Marc Mazza, a board member of the Miller Place Homeowners Association, said he was grateful the money was secured and the work could begin.
