Showers were moving Tuesday afternoon over parts of Suffolk County, from Ridge through Mattituck, dropping moderate to heavy rain, forecasters said.
The showers were moving east at about 20 mph as of 3:15 p.m., and thunderstorms were possible, the National Weather Service said.
Dense, early morning fog that shrouded parts of Long Island burned off as temperatures reached into the mid- to upper-70s Tuesday, but the National Weather Service warned of the slight risk of strong thunderstorms later in the day.
The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said potentially severe weather, with "thunderstorms ahead of an approaching cold front this afternoon and evening," could produce "locally strong winds" and even hail.
Nassau, Suffolk, the five boroughs, New Jersey and Connecticut are covered by the advisory, issued at 4:29 a.m. Tuesday. Showers and thunderstorms are also possible before 3 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.
The Federal Aviation Administration is reporting no delays at Kennedy and Long Island MacArthur airports, but said wind and cloud cover are causing delays of more than a half-hour at LaGuardia and Newark. Travelers should check with their carriers regarding delays.
Showers are possible Wednesday night, with a slight chance of showers possible Thursday, forecasters said.
