Sick crewman rescued from boat off Shinnecock

A Coast Guard rescue boat evacuated a sick crew member from a fishing vessel early Thursday off Shinnecock, a spokesman for the federal agency said.

Crew from the fishing vessel Good News II requested medical assistance from the Coast Guard because of a sick crew member at about 5 a.m., the spokesman said.

After a flight surgeon determined the crew member, a 63-year-old man, needed medical attention, Coast Guard personnel from the Shinnecock station transferred him aboard the rescue boat and took him to a waiting emergency team in Shinnecock, the spokesman said.

"We quickly transited out to meet the fishing vessel and safely transferred the patient to our boat," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Patrick Rogers, the rescue boat coxswain, in a statement released by the Coast Guard. "We assessed the patient's condition and administered basic first-aid treatment while we headed back to the station."

The identity of the sick crew member was not released, and the spokesman did not have details on the man's condition.

The Good News II's home port is Hampton Roads, Va., the spokesman said.
