Skeletal remains found off hiking trail in Middle Island, cops say

Police on Saturday continued to investigate skeletal remains that were found off a hiking trail in Middle Island.

Whether the bones, found on Friday afternoon, are human or animal is under investigation by homicide detectives, Suffolk County police said.

A man found the bones near Rocky Point Road at Yaphank Middle Island Road just before 3:30 p.m. Friday and called 911, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, a police spokeswoman said Saturday afternoon.
