A small plane registered to a Ronkonkoma firm crashed in western Massachusetts Sunday, killing one person and injuring three others, Federal Aviation Administration officials said.
The plane - a Cessna 206G, also known as a Stationair - crashed around 3:50 p.m. in Leverett, Mass., a town of about 1,600 residents located 35 miles north of Springfield, Mass.
One person was killed, said Holly Baker, an FAA spokeswoman. Two were seriously injured and one was in critical condition, and all were being treated at Massachusetts hospitals, she said. No names were released.
The Cessna is registered to Airborne Maintenance Inc., an aircraft repair station headquartered out of Long Island MacArthur Airport. The 28-year-old fixed single-engine craft landed in a wooded area, said Baker.
The FAA is investigating and the National Transportation Safety Board will be on the scene Monday, the agencies said.
Flightaware.com, a website that tracks flight plans and movements, reported the plane was headed to MacArthur before it went down.
Authorities said they did not know yet where the plane departed from or where it was headed. The plane did not have to file a flight plan because its pilot was operating under visual flight rules, Baker said.
Before crashing, the plane struck some high-tension wires but it's not believed that they caused the accident, Baker said.
"That will be part of what's investigated," said Sgt. Matthew Murray of the Massachusetts State Police.
NTSB will produce a preliminary report about the crash within two weeks, spokeswoman Bridget Serchak said. A report on probable cause will be produced in 12 to 18 months, she said.
Leverett police, who responded to the crash scene, declined to comment.
A representative from an answering service that responded to a reporter's phone call to Airborne Maintenance Inc. said no one from the firm was available to comment.
