Suffolk Police Marine Bureau officers continued to search the waters off Smith Point Beach on Tuesday night for the owner of a motorboat that washed ashore empty Sunday.

The Coast Guard suspended its search for the boater about 7 p.m. Monday night, said Petty Officer John Hightower of Coast Guard Sector New York. That search will resume "if we find any amplifying information," he said.

Tuesday night, Suffolk Police Marine Bureau vessels were patrolling the area near where the boat washed ashore at Smith Point Beach, a department spokeswoman said.

Police believe the boat went out around 10 a.m. on Sunday, a police spokesman said earlier in the day.

It was found around 8:15 p.m. about two miles west of Moriches Inlet, officials said Tuesday.

The male owner has been identified but not located, officials said.
