Suffolk police have determined that a report of a man missing in the waters off Smith Point County Park Wednesday was unfounded.

An eyewitness reported seeing someone in the shallow ocean who then vanished, the Suffolk County Police Department said late Wednesday. The report came in at about 5:45 p.m.

On Thursday, police reported that there were no reports of missing persons or overdue boaters or fishermen. All cars in the parking lot at the time of the call for help had left the lot by the end of the evening.

Police then determined the initial report of the missing person was unfounded.
