Expansion of artificial reef in Smithtown

On Thursday, the state Department of Environmental Conservation used recycled materials from the state Department of Transportation and two decommissioned ships to expand the artifical reef in Long Island Sound in Smithtown. Officials say the artificial reef will improve existing marine habitats, promote biodiversity and environmental sustainability, and boost Long Island's recreational and sport fishing and diving industries.
