Steven Snair, the Democratic candidate for Smithtown supervisor, is working part-time as a $25-an-hour assistant county attorney on special assignment in Suffolk's new traffic violations bureau.

The Nesconset lawyer, 31, is one of more than a dozen assistants prosecuting bureau cases, comptroller's records show. He's been paid $1,200 since starting May 3. He said he used no political connections to get the job. He's limited to a maximum of 17.5 hours per week, he said.

"In the interest of public safety, I do it," said Snair, whose private practice focuses on foreclosure, leases, eviction and landlord-tenant issues.
