Young artists are being encouraged to create works portraying their favorite place in Smithtown through a local contest.

The Smithtown Youth Bureau and Youth Advisory Board are accepting submissions for their 2nd Annual High School Art Contest through Jan. 28. Participation is open to any high school student who lives in the Town of Smithtown. The contest is to be judged by local professional artists.

"We are excited to see what the students think of as a favorite spot in their hometown," Jackie Levine of the Smithtown Youth Bureau said in a statement.

Each art piece must be no larger than 8 1/2 by 11 inches and in two-dimensional format. The submission must be accompanied by an official cover sheet and a 3-by 5-inch index card describing why the place depicted is special. Detailed guidelines, application forms and cover sheets can be downloaded at www.smithtownny.gov/youthbureau under the "announcements" tab.

For more information call the Smithtown Youth Bureau at 631-360-7595. All applicants must follow the guidelines in order to be considered, officials said.
