Snowstorm deaths grow to four

Three Northport men died in separate instances shortly after trying to remove snow dumped by the weekend's powerful storm, increasing the number of known snow-related fatalities on Long Island to four, authorities said.

A snow-covered James Scheinzbach, 76, was found by two passersby on the sidewalk in front of his Main Street home Friday night, said Northport Village police chief Ric Bruckenthal.

"He had gone out to shovel the snow and had a heart attack," Bruckenthal said. "It had snowed on top of him."

Then on Saturday afternoon, Alan Lam, 51, stopped using a snowblower outside his Waterside Avenue home and went back in, complaining of chest pains, the police chief said.

Lam collapsed and rescuers tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at Huntington Hospital, Bruckenthal said.

A few hours later, in the early evening, Ludwig Farr, 81, also had a heart attack at his Ocean Avenue home, the chief said.

"People had seen him earlier outside, shoveling," Bruckenthal said.

Rescuers tried to resuscitate Farr and took him to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the chief said.

It was the same night that an unidentified 58-year-old Selden man suffered a fatal heart attack while clearing snow.

Bruckenthal said the three storm-related deaths in the village should be a lesson to others. "Know your limitations. The snow's not going anywhere soon."
