David Laffer was indicted Monday on charges in connection with the Father's Day rampage at a Medford pharmacy that left four people dead, a court source said.
The nature of the charges was not clear Monday night. Police charged Laffer last Wednesday with first-degree murder and resisting arrest, accusing him of gunning down a pharmacist, a clerk and two customers at Haven Drugs on Southaven Avenue.
Police officials had said additional charges were likely after a grand jury review of the worst mass shooting on Long Island since Colin Ferguson fatally shot six people on the Long Island Rail Road in 1993.
Robert Clifford, a spokesman for the Suffolk district attorney's office, said late Monday that no indictment in the June 19 slayings had been handed up to a judge. He declined to comment further, citing the secrecy of grand jury proceedings.
Laffer, who did not testify to the grand jury, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in Central Islip and be arraigned on the indictment at a later point, defense attorney Mary Elizabeth Abbate said.
Laffer's wife, Melinda Brady, who authorities say drove the getaway car after Laffer gunned down four people at Haven Drugs, was transferred from the Suffolk County jail Monday to the Riverhead court complex for a meeting with prosecutors, a law enforcement source said.
Authorities have said Brady is cooperating, but it was not known whether she testified to the grand jury Monday. Her attorney, Jeremy Mis, said last week she wanted to testify. Mis could not be reached Monday.
Laffer, 33, of Medford, is being held without bail. Brady, 29, of Medford, is being held on $750,000 cash bail or $1.5-million bond and faces charges of third-degree robbery and obstructing police as they conducted a search of the couple's home. Prosecutors have said the robbery charge would "very likely" be upgraded.
