The National Weather Service warned of a moderate risk of rip currents through Tuesday evening for the South Shore and New York City.

Surf heights were expected to be in the two- to three-foot range, the weather service said in a morning advisory.

Rip currents are strong, narrow currents moving away from shore. Swimmers caught in them are advised to swim sideways out of the current, and then swim toward shore.

The Nassau County Department of Health said all beaches were open except for Piping Rock Beach Club in Lattingtown, which has been closed to bathing due to elevated bacterial levels. Suffolk County reported no beach closings.

Mostly clear skies were forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, and there was a slight chance of showers Wednesday night, and a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday, the agency said. Tuesday and Wednesday were to see highs near 85.

Friday and the following weekend were expected to be clear with a high in the 80s.
