Southampton boccie playoffs postponed
Heavy rains and scheduling conflicts among local elected officials led the Southampton Boccie League to postpone its playoffs, which had been scheduled for Sept. 11.
The league was to hold a memorial tribute before the first of two playoff games, but several elected officials said they could not attend.
In addition, the 75-foot-long clay boccie courts are soaked and would not be suitable for play by the weekend, according to Steve Marciw, an ex-Marine who learned to play boccie 50 years ago when he was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
"The courts are just saturated," he said.
Marciw, who was instrumental in forming the league four years ago, has watched it grow from eight to 24 teams, each of which has five players.
The playoffs now are rescheduled for Sept. 18, at 1 p.m., at the town boccie field in North Sea Park.
