Southampton police: Deliveryman killed by hit-run driver

A hit-and-run driver killed an out-of-state deliveryman Thursday morning, Southampton Town police said.

The victim was identified as Joseph Lynn McAlla, 63, of Clifford, Pennsylvania.

McAlla had gotten out of his vehicle while making a delivery to Southampton Masonry at about 2:30 a.m. when he was struck and killed by a vehicle that left the scene, Lt. Susan Ralph said.

Ralph said patrol units found McAlla while responding to a call about a person lying in the roadway of County Road 39.

County Road 39, which borders Tuckahoe to the north and Shinnecock Hills to the south, was closed for several hours between Shrubland and Tuckahoe roads.

No information was immediately available on the vehicles involved.
