Who damaged a church sign, stealing lettering, during an act of vandalism in Southampton in early July? Suffolk County police hate crimes unit investigators want to know.

Police are asking for help in identifying the person -- or, people -- responsible for damaging the sign outside the Southampton Full Gospel Church on County Road 39. And they're asking anyone with information to call Hate Crimes Unit detectives at 631-852-6323 or Southampton Town police at 631-728-5000.

All calls will remain confidential, police said.

Police did not explain the actual damage to the board, but said lettering had been taken.

A picture of the sign released by police on Thursday read, simply: For Thou Lord Art Good and Ready to Forgive.
