Southampton Town cops: 2 DWI arrests within half hour

Within a 30-minute span early Thursday, Southampton Town police made two drunken driving arrests -- one following a routine traffic stop, the other after an accident, authorities said.

The first arrest came after officers stopped Angel Ortiz, 24, of Riverhead, for failing to maintain his lane on County Road 104 in Riverside at 1:01 a.m., police said in a news release Friday.

The second happened at 1:30 a.m., when Evan Sampson, 53, of Flanders, was arrested by officers responding to an accident he was involved in on Glider Avenue in Flanders, police said.

Sampson was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and unlawful possession of marijuana. He also received summonses for having just one license plate and for having no left sideview mirror, police said.

Arraignment details were not immediately available.

Ortiz also was arrested and charged with DWI, as well as with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, unlicensed operator, operator without a seatbelt and with moving from his lane "unsafely," police said. His arraignment details also were immediately unavailable.
