About 13 dogs and puppies were found in deplorable conditions in a house in Greenlawn Monday and removed by animal welfare officers, the Suffolk County SPCA said.

"They were covered in their own feces, and kept in cramped condition," said Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk SPCA. "The smell - the environment they were in was not fitting for an animal or a person."

Gross said the animals, removed from a house on Delamere Street by the Suffolk SPCA, Huntington Town Animal Control and Suffolk County Police officers, would be examined by a veterinarian.

"We're just keeping our fingers crossed that the animals are healthy enough to survive the ordeal," Gross said.

No arrests were made and no summons were issued Monday, Gross said, but the case is still under investigation by authorities.
