A Port Jefferson man faces an animal cruelty charge after authorities found his pit bull living in its own excrement and in an emaciated condition, the Suffolk County SPCA said Thursday.

Christopher Petit, 37, of 5 New York Ave., kept his male adult pit bull in a travel crate in a dark basement and failed to supply adequate food and water, the SPCA said in a news release.

SPCA detectives found the dog living in its own feces and urine in May, with cuts and sores on its body, Chief Roy Gross said. The dog improved with proper care and sustenance and was placed in the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, Gross said.

Arraignment information for Petit was not immediately available.
