SPCA seeks person who pushed dog out car door in Coram

The Suffolk County SPCA is offering a reward in hopes of finding the person who dumped a dog out of a vehicle in Coram last week.

Roy Gross, chief of department of the Suffolk SPCA, said a woman in Coram reported seeing a blue sport utility vehicle stop on Sun Valley Drive about 10 a.m. on Thursday. A man wearing a baseball cap pushed a small white dog with a bushy tail out the passenger door and onto the curb before driving away, he said

"The dog was standing there, really nervous," Gross said.

The dog was described as a male, unneutered American Eskimo dog mix about 6 years old. The dog had a microchip, but the information on the chip led to an original owner in Sound Beach, who said the dog had vanished while it was tethered in his front yard nearly four years ago.

That owner was unable to take the dog back, since he had gotten another pet that does not get along with other animals, Gross said.

The rescued dog is now at the Town of Brookhaven animal shelter, where workers there have described his temperament as "sweet," Gross said. The dog did not appear to have been injured.

The SPCA is now offering a $2,000 reward for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the person who abandoned the animal.

"We would love to find the person responsible for this," Gross said.

In February, someone threw an injured male pit bull mix out of the window of a pickup truck in Mastic Beach. That dog was reunited with its owners, but the culprit in that case remains at large.
