A Selden teenager faces a felony animal cruelty charge after he attacked his ex-girlfriend's dog, causing fatal injuries, authorities said Wednesday.
Detectives with the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals arrested Vincent A. Maio, 18, of 9 Montclair Dr., "for allegedly picking up the dog, throwing it into a nightstand, and then punching it in the head," on Jan. 31, the SPCA said in a news release.
The dog, a 5-year-old female Pomeranian named Foxy, sustained multiple rib fractures and a punctured lung, and her condition deteriorated to the point that CPR had to be administered at a veterinarian's office before she died, SPCA Chief Roy Gross said in the release.
Gross called the alleged attack "a horrible act of animal cruelty," adding that "Foxy was a very docile dog who didn't deserve to be treated in this cruel manner."
Maio was arrested at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, court records show.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
