State: West Babylon transportation company owner gets probation for tax evasion
The owner of two West Babylon transportation companies was sentenced to 5 years of probation for tax evasion, state officials said Thursday.
Dean D'Elia, 53, the operator of D'Elia Express Inc. and DEXP Inc., also has agreed to pay the state $321,235 in withholding tax over the next five years, the state Department of Taxation and Finance said in a news release.
D'Elia, of Flushing, pleaded guilty in Suffolk County Court to first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. He had been charged with filing false withholding tax returns from 2004 to 2008 "in an effort to evade taxes" he owed the state, tax officials said.
