A Stony Brook University student jumped to his death Tuesday, authorities said.

The man fell from an elevation at a Stimson College dormitory and was found in the quad, which is surrounded by four dormitories, authorities said.

Suffolk County police were notified of the fall at 1:53 p.m.

University police and Suffolk homicide detectives were called and authorities said the student's death was deemed an apparent suicide, said Suffolk Homicide Det. Sgt. Charles Leser. He said the student was pronounced dead at 3:50 p.m.

In a statement, university President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. said: "A Stony Brook University undergraduate student was discovered unresponsive, lying in the vicinity of Stimson College in Roosevelt quad. The student was immediately transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained from a fall.

"The student's family has been notified and I cannot begin to imagine their sense of loss," the statement read, adding that grief counselors were available.

Robert J. Lenahan, chief of university police, issued a campuswide alert just after 2:30 p.m., saying officers were responding to a "medical emergency" at Stimson College.
