A total of 5,107 Long Island Power Authority customers in Suffolk County, almost all of them in Brookhaven Town, were without power shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday after a strong thunderstorm struck the area.

Hardest hit, according to LIPA figures, was Coram, with more than 3,000 customers without power.

LIPA spokeswoman Vanessa Baird-Streeter said crews were held over from the day shift to help fix the outages, which were caused by downed wires and blown fuses. Crews were making repairs Monday night.

Streeter said the storm struck a little after 8 p.m. No similar storms were expected overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
