A police vehicle on its way to a call hit a skateboarder Tuesday night in Wyandanch, shutting down a main roadway, Suffolk police said.

First Precinct officers were going south on Straight Path about 5:10 p.m. when  their sport utility vehicle struck Michael Moccasin who was going north in the center turn lane, near South 24th Street, police said. The SUV was operating with lights and sirens on at the time, police said.

Moccasin, 28, of Wyandanch, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, police said.  The officers offered aid until  other responders arrived. Moccasin was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, police said. The two officers were not injured, but were taken to the hospital for evaluation, authorities said.

Straight Path was closed in both directions as major case detectives investigated but reopened about 9 p.m.

The police vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Major Case Unit detectives at 631-852-6555.
