1 Suffolk beach closed, no swimming at 3 others, officials say
Suffolk County health officials closed one beach and are advising swimmers to stay out of the water at three South Shore beaches Friday because of concerns about elevated bacteria levels.
Holiday Beach, East Moriches, was closed Friday as a result of elevated levels of bacteria in the water, with rainfall a likely factor, a health department spokeswoman said.
The advisory against swimming covers Corey Beach and Bayport Beach in Bayport, and Sayville Marina Park in Sayville.
The advisory is a precautionary measure for beaches known to have substantial storm water runoff caused by heavy rainfall, such as what occurred Friday. The runoff can raise bacteria levels, which results in the waters failing to meet state standards for swimming, health officials said.
The department said the advisory against swimming at the three beaches will be lifted at 1 p.m. Saturday unless water samples reveal elevated bacterial levels.
