High levels of blue-green algae have been confirmed in Sagg Pond in Sagaponack, Lake Capri in West Islip and Old Town Pond in Southampton, Suffolk County health officials said Tuesday, and residents are advised to refrain from using water from or wading or swimming in those waters.

"Contact with waters that appear scummy or discolored should be avoided," officials said Tuesday in a statement. Children and pets should also be kept away.

Those who display symptoms after being exposed to algae in those waters should seek medical attention, officials said. Symptoms include "nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; skin, eye or throat irritation; allergic reactions or breathing difficulties," health officials said.

Natural in low numbers in lakes and streams, blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, "can become abundant" and toxic, the statement said.

Also on Tuesday, Suffolk health officials said an advisory to beachgoers to refrain from wading or swimming in Lake Ronkonkoma at Brookhaven Park because of a localized blue-green algae bloom was lifted.
