Suffolk cops: Boat falls off trailer on LIE

Three lanes of the Long Island Expressway in Hauppauge were reopened Saturday night after they were closed when a 30-foot boat fell off a trailer as it was being towed, Suffolk County police said.

Police said the incident occurred in the westbound lanes near Exit 56 just before 7 p.m.

A Dodge pickup truck was towing a boat when the boat fell off the trailer, striking the back of the pickup truck before coming to rest with the bow of the boat on top of the center divider blocking the HOV lane of traffic, police said.

Authorities said the boat was improperly secured on the trailer.

The uninjured driver of the pickup truck was issued summonses for an unregistered trailer and unsecured load, police said.

The HOV, middle and left lanes of the LIE were closed over the incident, and were reopened shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday.
