Suffolk cops: Three-year-old boy suffers bullet wound in accident

A young child suffered grazing bullet wounds to his belly and arm in an accident inside his Smithtown home Tuesday, Suffolk police said.

Fourth Precinct officers responded to a 911 call of a possible discharge of a gun at a Devon Lane home just before 7 p.m., police said.

The boy, 3, was first taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, then transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was undergoing surgery last night, police said.

"It's not life-threatening, and it appears to be accidental," Fourth Precinct Insp. William Murphy said from Siena hospital, characterizing the injuries as grazing wounds from one bullet.

Detectives continued investigating into the night and were trying to piece together what happened.

Murphy said it does not appear the boy had been playing with a gun.

But, citing the investigation, he declined to release other details, including how the accident happened.
